Sumac Saffron Spritz
A refreshing and mildly tart beverage enhanced with saffron and cardamom flavors.
Ingredients
- 3 to 4 strands saffron, plus extra for garnish
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1 tablespoon ground sumac
- 1 cup chilled club soda or water
- Ice
Instructions
- Using a mortar and pestle, grind the saffron with 2 tablespoons of sugar until it forms a fine powder.
- In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, sugar, crushed cardamom, and the powdered saffron mixture. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Remove from heat and stir in the sumac. Cover the saucepan and let the mixture steep for 30 minutes, then strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. Chill before serving.
- Fill a tall glass with ice, then stir the syrup with the chilled club soda or water in a pitcher. Pour the drink into the glass.
- Garnish with a few strands of saffron.
- Any leftover syrup can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
