Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/8-1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Separate the egg white from the yolk and place the yolk in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add sugar to the yolk and whisk until the mixture becomes pale yellow and fluffy. Set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and nutmeg until steaming, but not boiling.
  4. Slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking as you do so.
  5. Return the mixture to the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens, but do not allow it to boil.
  6. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon, if using.
  7. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
