Ingredients
- 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/8-1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg white from the yolk and place the yolk in a mixing bowl.
- Add sugar to the yolk and whisk until the mixture becomes pale yellow and fluffy. Set aside.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and nutmeg until steaming, but not boiling.
- Slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking as you do so.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens, but do not allow it to boil.
- Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon, if using.
- Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
